French-language Express Entry draws
How French-language proficiency category rounds work in Express Entry: who is eligible, how cut-offs have compared with general rounds, and how to position your profile for an invitation.
French-language proficiency is one of IRCC's category-based selection categories. In these rounds, only candidates who meet the published French threshold and are otherwise eligible for an Express Entry program can be invited. Because the pool is narrower, cut-off scores in French rounds have frequently been lower than in general rounds.

How it works: step by step
- 1
Confirm the current threshold
IRCC publishes the French level required for the category — verify it before testing.
- 2
Test and convert
Sit TEF Canada or TCF Canada and confirm every ability meets the threshold.
- 3
Enter the pool
Create or update your profile so the category applies to you.
- 4
Watch the draw history
Track French-round cut-offs and frequency instead of relying on a single number.
- 5
Prepare documents early
Have police certificates, reference letters and funds ready before an invitation arrives.
Expert insight
Candidates often test French after seeing a low French-round cut-off, then find the round threshold applies to every ability. Check your weakest ability against the threshold first — that is what decides category eligibility.
